One Blog, Many Doctors: New Cosmetic Surgery Information Site Shares Advice from Surgeons

Most doctors have an opinion about the latest surgical methods and trends but lack the time to maintain a full-time blog. A new site gives the inside scoop on cosmetic surgery information from cosmetic surgeons who specialize in a range of procedures.

San Luis Obispo, CA (September 2008) - The Web now has an insider's perspective on cosmetic surgery trends thanks to the recent launch of Cosmetic Surgery Chronicle (www.cosmeticsurgerychronicle.com), a new blog that gives cosmetic and plastic surgeons the opportunity to be heard on important topics in aesthetic medicine.

"Surgeons tend to find it difficult to maintain a personal blog because professional commitments take up their time," says Ryan Miller, who created the blog and is president of Etna Interactive, an online medical marketing firm that serves doctors, hospitals, and device manufacturers in a variety of medical fields. "Cosmetic surgery information is constantly evolving, and the surgeons who contribute to Cosmetic Surgery Chronicle have perspectives that are valuable for blog participants who want to understand the changes from an informed point of view."

Since its launch in July, Cosmetic Surgery Chronicle has posted articles by plastic surgeons across the United States exploring a range of topics in plastic and cosmetic surgery. Advice and information posted on the blog so far has ranged from resources for silicone implant safety research, to the mechanics of laser-assisted liposuction, to opinions about the ethical and medical issues at work in the debate over teen liposuction.

Many of the surgeons have also focused on safety issues; for example, through a step-by-step outline of how patients can differentiate between surgeons' qualifications and make sure that the person operating on them is properly trained.

"The collaborative nature of the blog environment ensures diverse perspectives and broad topical coverage, while the accessibility and commenting features allow readers to participate actively in the conversation," adds Miller.

The blog's archive and search options allow it to operate as a source for readers researching procedures, while the categories for procedure and patient characteristics help new readers identify the material they need quickly. The site also facilitates immediate feedback by enabling readers to comment to doctors' posts, and doctors to respond both to readers and to posts from other surgeons.

For each contributing doctor the site provides a biographical page that outlines their practice, qualifications, and most popular procedures. Coupled with the articles, the profiles help readers understand what kind of experience informs each doctor's opinions, and how each one interacts with patients and the larger cosmetic surgery community. Online, bad advice about cosmetic surgery abounds, but this blog seeks to add more well-informed opinions to the discussion.

"The media so often sensationalizes cosmetic surgery," says Miller. "They seem to forget there are important medical concerns underlying every procedure. For a lot of our surgeons, that misinformation provides a huge educational opportunity. They want their patients to be healthy and satisfied, and sharing their opinions about current topics online is one excellent way to meet that goal."
